Pictorial History of the 447th Bombardment Group (H)

"Published as an unofficial history of the Group's activities from activation to completion of 258 Combat Missions in the European Theatre of Operations, through the courtesy of the Officers' Club, whose Board of Directors made available funds to apply against publication costs on copies for distribution to members of the 447th Group who were on its rosters as of the dates of departure from the E.T.O. for the Z. of I."

This material was compiled during the group's deactivation in Florida in late 1945, published in 1946 and distributed to members of the 447th. Included are approximately 200 photos of combat crews and 250 photos of ground crew, all unidentified.  They are presented here in the same order as in the book, and identified by page and photo number.

Our goal is to name everyone shown.  If you recognize someone but don't remember the name, let us know anyway. Even knowing the unit of the person or crew in the picture can help.

The images which follow are presented in the same order and same format as they appear in the book. They were scanned from my father's copy of the Pictorial History. This copy is in relatively good condition. The binding is in need of minor repair and while there is some yellowing of page edges, paper condition throughout the book is surprisingly good.

The images you see here are not as clear as if scanned from original photographs.  Some of the originals provided to the printer were underexposed or faded.  Photos in the book were then printed using a 150 DPI halftone process, just slightly better than used by newspapers of the time.  As a result, effective resolution of the scanned image cannot exceed 150 DPI.  Full pages were scanned at 600 DPI, digitally enhanced where possible for contrast and image sharpness, and then individual images reduced to the original 150 DPI for presentation here. Unfortunately, a very few of the images are not clear, and digital enhancement provided little improvement.
